  • How full is your cup? Leadership begins with you

    In the drive to lead, support others, and deliver results, we often forget to check in with ourselves. We give our time, our energy, our ideas — sometimes without noticing how depleted we’ve become. But here’s the truth: leadership begins with you. And if your cup is running on empty, it won’t be too long before everything else starts to suffer too.

    Taking time to pause, reflect, and replenish isn’t just self-care, it’s leadership in action.

    A recent reminder from a fellow leader

    I recently re-connected with someone on a leadership programme I’m facilitating – someone I know to normally be engaged and full of stimulating contributions. On this occasion, they seemed flat, lethargic, and significantly less interactive than usual. So, I simply asked: “What’s happening for you today?”

    They paused , then shared that they’d been fighting-off a cough and cold for the past seven weeks. Exhausted, drained, and running on fumes, they were just about holding it together until their upcoming holiday.

    That moment stayed with me. Because while they were still physically present, their energy wasn’t – their spark was missing. And as leaders, we don’t exist in isolation, our energy and our presence (or absence of it) has a ripple effect on those around us.

    What impact does this have on our teams when we operate from depletion rather than strength?

    Why self-care isn’t optional for leaders

    Leadership is not a sprint, it’s a long and often complex journey filled with demands, decisions, and human dynamics. When leaders neglect themselves in the name of productivity or selflessness, they risk burnout, blurred decision-making, and disengagement. Keeping your own cup full is not indulgent, it’s necessary. It’s the fuel that enables you to show up with clarity, make grounded choices, and support others with compassion rather than exhaustion.

    Simple practices that can help keep you centred

    ☕ Schedule regular time to reflect
    Even 10 minutes a day to check in with yourself can shift your mindset. Journaling, mindful walks, or moments of stillness can all create space to process and reset.

    ☕ Redefine boundaries
    Know where your ‘yes’ becomes a ‘no’, and honour that line. Leadership doesn’t mean always being available, it means being intentionally available.

    ☕ Move your body, nourish your mind
    We know this, but how often do we actually live it? What you eat, how you sleep, and whether you move – these all shape the quality of your leadership presence.

    ☕ Find your people
    Leadership can feel isolating. Having people around you who understand – whether coaches, peers, or mentors – can make all the difference.

    This is me, taking a moment… to pause, breathe, and reflect.

    In leadership, we often talk about resilience, clarity, and presence, but how often do we truly practise the self-care that sustains these qualities?

    This week, I gave myself permission to step back and reconnect. Not just with nature (though the Mediterranean view certainly helps), but with myself.

    Leadership isn’t just about output. It’s about energy. It’s about showing up for others in a meaningful way — and that begins with how we show up for ourselves.

    Lead from overflow, not emptiness

    When your cup is full – or even just half-full – you respond instead of react. You listen more deeply. You stay connected to your values. You lead with heart.

    That fleeting exchange during the programme reminded me how easy it is for even the most capable, committed leaders to fall into the trap of running on empty. And if we don’t notice it in ourselves, how can we model something different for those we lead?

    I recently had the pleasure of working with a talented group of leaders from Dubai World Trade Centre during a two-day Leadership & Strategy Masterclass. While the external heat in Dubai soared, the real energy was inside the room – where ideas were exchanged, assumptions were challenged, and powerful insights emerged.

    One message rang loud and clear: strategy alone isn’t enough. Leadership is the engine that turns strategy into action.

    Connecting people to purpose

    A well-written strategy looks good on paper. But unless people understand the why behind it, the likelihood of meaningful engagement is slim.

    When this connection is made consistently, it builds trust, ownership, and alignment – three critical ingredients for execution.

    Watch your language – it shapes your culture

    We explored how the smallest throw-away phrases can create unintended consequences. Phrases like “That’s difficult” or “We can’t do that” might seem harmless in the moment, but over time they shape the collective mindset.

    People may stop offering ideas. They may pull back. They may mentally check out.

    Instead, we talked about how leaders can create a language of possibility – acknowledging challenges while still championing progress. Language is a subtle but powerful leadership tool.

    Leadership isn’t one-size-fits-all

    Perhaps the most transformative shift came when we discussed the importance of adapting leadership approaches to suit different individuals. Helping people flourish doesn’t come from treating everyone the same – it comes from understanding what each person needs to thrive.

    This realisation took time to land. But once it did, the impact was immediate. Conversations changed. Leaders started listening differently. Coaching techniques became more targeted. And team members responded.

    The value of the intentional pause

    The quieter summer period in Dubai offered a valuable window for reflection and development – an opportunity for leaders to pause, invest in themselves, and return to their teams with greater clarity and intention.

    When leaders take time to reconnect with their purpose and sharpen their skills, it has a ripple effect throughout the organisation.

    Final thoughts

    Strategy is vital – but it doesn’t work in isolation. Leadership breathes life into it. That means communicating with clarity, influencing others to join you, and creating the conditions for your people to succeed.

  • Think you’re a good communicator? You might be surprised.

    It’s a question I often ask during leadership and professional development programmes: How well do you communicate? Most people respond with confidence, rating themselves 8 or 9 out of 10. It’s a familiar pattern – across sectors, seniority levels, and even cultures. And in some ways, it makes sense. We communicate every day, so we assume we’re doing it well. Effective leadership communication skills are often assumed rather than consciously developed.

    But then comes the moment of truth.

    “That 9 suddenly becomes a 6. Sometimes lower. People realise they weren’t as clear as they thought – or as tuned-in to the other person.”

    It’s not about catching people out. It’s about holding up a mirror to how we really communicate when it matters. The results are always revealing – and often humbling.

    Why we overestimate our communication skills

    We all like to think we’re good communicators. And in everyday terms, we probably are. But effective communication in professional settings – especially in leadership – demands far more than just talking, writing, or presenting.

    Most of us focus on what we’re saying, not how it’s received.

    We mistake fluency for effectiveness. Confidence for clarity. And because we’re rarely given feedback on our communication style (beyond “great presentation” or “that meeting went well”), we rarely stop to examine it.

    The illusion of communication

    There’s a quote I often share that always gets a knowing nod:

    It captures the heart of the issue. We believe we’ve been understood simply because we were clear – but that’s not how communication works. The true measure of effectiveness lies in the listener’s understanding, not the speaker’s intentions.

    Communication isn’t about talking more – it’s about connecting better

    To be a truly impactful communicator, you must:

    • Listen actively – not just hear, but really listen, without pre-planning your response.
    • Adapt your message – tailoring tone, content and delivery to your audience’s needs.
    • Check for understanding – through reflection, paraphrasing or clarification.
    • Notice non-verbal cues – what’s not said often carries the most weight.
    • Be aware of your impact – the emotional tone you set, consciously or not.

    “Communication is a leadership skill, not just a soft skill. And like all skills, it improves with conscious effort.”

    A challenge for the next conversation

    Before your next important meeting or conversation, ask yourself:

    • Am I being truly present – or distracted?
    • Have I invited others in – or taken up all the space?
    • Have I made it easy to understand – or just easy to say?
    • Have I confirmed alignment – or assumed it?

    These small shifts can lead to much stronger connections – and far fewer misunderstandings.

    Are you as good a communicator as you think you are?

    Most people aren’t – at least not consistently. But that’s not a criticism. It’s an opportunity. When you start paying closer attention to how you communicate, the shift in how people respond to you can be remarkable.
