    A recent reminder from a fellow leader

    I recently re-connected with someone on a leadership programme I’m facilitating – someone I know to normally be engaged and full of stimulating contributions. On this occasion, they seemed flat, lethargic, and significantly less interactive than usual. So, I simply asked: “What’s happening for you today?”

    They paused , then shared that they’d been fighting-off a cough and cold for the past seven weeks. Exhausted, drained, and running on fumes, they were just about holding it together until their upcoming holiday.

    That moment stayed with me. Because while they were still physically present, their energy wasn’t – their spark was missing. And as leaders, we don’t exist in isolation, our energy and our presence (or absence of it) has a ripple effect on those around us.

    What impact does this have on our teams when we operate from depletion rather than strength?

    Why self-care isn’t optional for leaders

    Leadership is not a sprint, it’s a long and often complex journey filled with demands, decisions, and human dynamics. When leaders neglect themselves in the name of productivity or selflessness, they risk burnout, blurred decision-making, and disengagement. Keeping your own cup full is not indulgent, it’s necessary. It’s the fuel that enables you to show up with clarity, make grounded choices, and support others with compassion rather than exhaustion.

    Even 10 minutes a day to check in with yourself can shift your mindset. Journaling, mindful walks, or moments of stillness can all create space to process and reset.

    Feeling busy has become a badge of honour. We fill our diaries, rush from one commitment to the next, and often measure our worth by how much we accomplish. Yet being busy and being purposeful are not the same thing.

    Whether you’re building a career, leading a team, running a business, or enjoying retirement, the question remains the same: are you spending your time on what matters most?

    Purpose is about spending time on things that bring meaning – not just momentum. Life feels less busy when it feels more aligned.

    “Let’s catch up soon!” we say. But weeks pass, then months. It’s not that we don’t care – it’s that we’re busy. Everyone is. Friends, colleagues, even those who’ve stepped back from full-time work often find their days packed and their calendars full. Somehow, life feels fuller – and not always in a fulfilling way.

    So why does life feel so relentlessly busy now, even compared to the 1980s or 1990s?

    The shifting landscape of time

    In the 1980s, being ‘busy’ had clearer boundaries – typically revolving around work, commuting, and home life. Leisure time was more protected, and multitasking was usually limited to listening to the radio while cooking dinner or catching up on paperwork after hours.

    Today, the lines between roles have blurred. Technology – while keeping us connected – has also made us more accessible, more of the time. A 2023 OECD report found that across all age groups, people now spend more time on screens, emails, and digital tasks than on active leisure. The “urgency loop” of notifications and constant availability can give the feeling of always being “on.”

    A 2016 study published in Harvard Business Review also noted a cultural shift: where wealth and status were once signalled by leisure, now they’re often demonstrated by a packed schedule. Busyness has become a badge of importance – subtly encouraging us to fill our time, even when we don’t necessarily need to.

    A culture of constant activity

    Even outside formal work, many people lead full lives – contributing to their communities, caring for others, managing households, pursuing creative projects, or simply trying to stay on top of it all. The desire to stay purposeful and engaged can unintentionally tip into over-commitment, especially when combined with the social pressure to keep up or stay relevant.

    While these activities are often deeply meaningful, they can also leave little space for rest, reflection, or the spontaneity we once associated with “free time.”

    • What activities give you energy rather than simply occupy your time?
    • Where are you saying yes when you really want to say no?
    • What would you spend more time doing if external expectations disappeared?

    In the world of adult development, we often hear that people learn best by doing – but experiential learning takes that a step further. It’s not just about being active; it’s about intentional experience, followed by reflection, insight, and application.

    What is experiential learning?

    At its core, experiential learning is grounded in the idea that meaningful growth happens when individuals are placed in situations that challenge their assumptions, provoke curiosity, and invite self-awareness. These experiences – whether structured or spontaneous – serve as mirrors, helping people see how they show up in different contexts and explore new possibilities for how they might choose to lead, communicate, or collaborate.

    One of the reasons experiential learning can be so revealing is that people often forget they are being observed. Their attention shifts from managing impressions to solving the challenge in front of them. In those moments, natural behaviours begin to emerge. We see how people respond to pressure, uncertainty, collaboration, disagreement and change. More importantly, they begin to see it too.

    The real value isn’t in the activity itself – it’s in the awareness that follows. When people recognise patterns in their own behaviour, they gain the opportunity to make different choices in the future.

    • When was the last time you truly learned something about yourself through an experience, not a theory?
    • In moments of group work or leadership, what behaviours do you tend to default to under pressure?
    • How open are you to feedback in the moment – and what helps you stay open?
    • Think of a time when you supported someone else’s growth. What made the experience meaningful – for them and for you?
    • Where in your work (or life) would you benefit from experimenting with a new behaviour or perspective?
